The Second Time Around (Sept. 2009)

Written by
Henry Denker
Directed by
Gail Wareing-Tonizzo

An unexpected romance engages widowed seniors in their golden years. They decide to introduce each other to their adult children, but they are met with a wall of resistance and disapproval. Even though the children’s own marriages are anything but perfect, they don’t hesitate to give relationship advice to their parents! Funny, fast-paced, and full of witty banter, this endearing comedy appeals to all ages.

Director's Notes

After directing a Minifest play designed for first time directors, I thought to myself, "I can do this". So I read many plays and looked for the challenges in each and every one. Then I came across "Second Time Around" by Henry Denker. What a wonderful script. It had all the elements I love to see in a play - humour, conflict, sarcasm, and comedy. I could not think of a better play to get my feet wet with.

We are first introduced to the respective adult children of the couple in question, and soon realize that we are in for many surprises in this warm-hearted look at life after 60. We experience relationships through the eyes of other and the perceived impact they have on our lives.

These characters are brought to live through the exceptional talents of the cast and the hard work of the crew. My gratitude goes to Elmira Theatre Company for having faith in my ability to direct a full length play.

Sue Jennings
Sue Jennings
Character: Cynthia Morse
While Susaun sadly realizes that she will never again reach the giddy artistic heights she experienced in grade one portraying a talking forest tree in "The Golden Goose", appearing on stage in "The Second Time Around" has been a pretty close second. Thanks to Gail, Joe, Kathy, production crew and my fellow cast mates for a laugh-filled fun-fest!

Susan could waste valuable paper listing all the shows she has been involved in on stage and off but instead wants to invite you to sit back and enjoy the experience of live theatre! Dont forget to come back in February to see her directorial skills at work in "Moonlight and Magnolias"!

Thanks to an off-the-wall cast and crew - especially Gail, our more than patient director - for making this a far out experience. And to you, the grooviest audience we could hope for - unless “the” Harrison Ford shows up…

Gail is excited to be directing her first full-length play. She has been on stage and off with ETC since 2000 when she was introduced to theater in the role of Edit in "Kilroy was Here". She would like to thank the wonderful and talented cast for all their hard work and patience, and her crew, without whom, none of this would work.
